“I’m OK, You’re OK” or “I Suck, You Suck” — 6 of one; half dozen of the other, I say.

A new book says we’re in a narcissism epidemic. Why you’re not so special.

Interesting article on Newsweek about the new Generation Me. The last paragraph is the best:

“We live in a world where everyone can be a star—if only on YouTube.
The general sense among students on that New Haven campus is that with
the world being such a competitive, cutthroat place, they have to be
narcissists. Well, you may need a supersize ego to win “America’s Next
Top Model” or to justify your multimillion dollar bonus. But last I
checked, most of our lives don’t require all that attitude. Treating
the whole world as if it works for you doesn’t suggest you’re special,
it means you’re an ass. As an antidote to a skyrocketing self-worth,
Twenge recommends humility, evaluating yourself more accurately,
mindfulness and putting others first. Such values may seem quaint,
maybe even self-defeating, to those of us who think we’re special, but
trust me: it gets easier with practice.

Mickel Adzema says:

think I already read that book…when it first came out in the 70s, I
believe. Was called “I Suck, You Suck,” right? I believe it was in the
same series, published by Esso (now Exxon, of course) if I’m not
mistaken, as the infamous, “So, You Think You Deserve a Union, Eh?” as
well as the classic, “Living on the Minimum Wage: The How, and THE WHY
you should do it.”
Now, that I think of it. There were more in those classics:
“The Second Income: Not Just a Necessity. It’s Women”s Chance to Shine”
“Turning Recession Lemons Into Recession Lemonades.”
“Starting at The Bottom, At ANY Age.”

Seriously, though… as I responded to Jen Consalvo:

“Re: http://bit.ly/cmzsTy
@noreaster I didn’t realize that self-flagellation was back. Boy, the
filthy rich can convince anybody of ANYthing with their massive media
matrix manipulation and misinformation. I’m old enough to have seen
just about every generation including mine being whipped with claims of
“selfishness” each time the “filthies” pulled off another massive
wealth transfer upward (tax breaks for the rich — Reagun, Bush 1, Bush
2). I didn’t realize so many people were Catholic or Jewish…or are
WASPs engaging in huge guilt tripping now too? God forbid anyone should
have any self-esteem … they might even start questioning again, daring
to question authority! You think there’s narcissism? I’m a
psychotherapist, I’ll tell you what I see on My Space/ You Tube/
Facebook — people scared out of their minds to reveal more than a few
words…a generation for whom Twitter is a blessing because they are
terrified that if they expressed more than 140 characters they might
mistakenly reveal something horrible about themselves for which they
would be ostracized…and we better keep those characters as iconic as
possible, so we can always, Dylan-like, claim that we are simply not
being understood. And is the sharing more than a thumbs up, a star, a
rating, u “ty” a “yep”?

You think there’s narcissism???? Well now that they’ve stopped dissing you, hey, here’s the whip. Enjoy yourself.”

Oh, yeah, I forgot another book from that series…MOST important… the
widely acclaimed and reviewed, “If I Say I’m Narcissistic Enough, Will
You Think I’m a Good Person?”
